Personal Safety Awareness Training (for youth)

Part of Scouting's commitment to safety is helping to make sure every Venturer can recognize and respond to possible danger, whether in Venturing, school, work, or other settings.  Venturing Personal Safety Awareness Training features a series of vignettes about some of the risks that young people can face in today's society, including sexual harassment and assault, suicide, and Internet stalking and harassment.  This training is required for advancement through the New Awards (see Awards tab at left), except for those Venturers who registered before June 1, 2014. 

Venturing Youth Protection Training (for adults)

 

The purpose of the Guide to Safe Scouting is to prepare members of the Boy Scouts of America to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner. The policies and guidelines have been established because of the real need to protect members from known hazards that have been identified through 100 years of experience. Limitations on certain activities should not be viewed as stumbling blocks; rather, policies and guidelines are best described as stepping-stones toward safe and enjoyable adventures. 

 

All participants in official Scouting activities should become familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and be aware of state or local government regulations that supersede Boy Scouts of America policies and guidelines. The Guide to Safe Scouting provides an overview of Scouting policies and procedures rather than comprehensive, standalone documentation. For some items, the policy statements are complete. Unit leaders are expected to review the additional reference material cited prior to conducting such activities.

In situations not specifically covered in this guide, activity planners should evaluate the risk or potential risk of harm, and respond with action plans based on common sense, community standards, the Boy Scout motto, and safety policies and practices commonly prescribed for the activity by experienced providers and practitioners.

BSA Venturing Web Site
Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Rank Advancement to Eagle Scout for Male Venturers
A Venturer who as first attained the rank of First Class in a Troop and is not yet 18 may continue advancement to Eagle within a Crew.  He may fulfill leadership requirements on the road to Eagle Scout by serving as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, quartermaster, historian, den chief, guide, webmaster, or Leave No Trace trainer.  The board of review for a Venturer who is dual registered in a Troop and Crew may be conducted by either.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (pdf)
This course is for all crew members holding a leadership position.  Officers should participate as a group, and any member may participate.  This training should be conducted immediately or shortly after a new term of office begins.  A crew that has experienced officers that have been through this course before should consider using graduates as trainers or facilitators for some of the segments.  The Advisor or a previously trained Venturer organizes and leads the course, involving trained adult leaders and previously trained Venturers.  Participating in ILSC is a requirement for the Discovery Award.  Leading the delivery of ILSC is a requirement for the Summit Award.  This course can be taken any time by Venturers, whether they are working on an award or not.   

Goal-Setting and Time Management Training (pdf)
Finding a successful time management strategy depends on a person’s personality, ability to self-motivate and level of self-discipline. This course introduces established methods for improving a Venturer’s ability to effectively manage the events in his or her life in relation to time.  This course should be taught by more experienced Venturers, as well as adult volunteers participating in the program.  This course is a requirement for the Discovery Award.   It can be taken any time by Venturers, whether they are working on an award or not.  

First Aid & CPR Courses
These are standard Course such as offered by American Red Cross or Heartsaver, or equivalent courses.  These courses are a requirement for the Discovery Award.  They can be taken any time by Venturers, whether they are working on an award or not. 

Project Management Training
This course has not been made available yet, and Jan 30, 2015 BSA announced (https://www.facebook.com/BSAVenturing) it will not be required until June 1, 2015.  It is a requirement for the Pathfinder award, as is planning and giving leadership to a Tier II or Tier III adventure.  (A Tier I adventure involves little planning and less than one day.  A Tier II adventure involves some planning and is less than four days.  A Tier III adventure involves extensive planning and at least four days.)  This course can be taken any time by Venturers, whether they are working on the award or not.  

Mentoring Training
This training is designed to help Venturers understand how to mentor other members of the crew and appreciate the role mentoring plays in personal growth and leadership for both the mentee and mentor.  This course should be taught by more experienced Venturers, as well as adult volunteers participating in the program.  This course is a requirement for the Summit award, as is mentoring another Venturer in planning and implementation of a Venturing activity.  This course can be taken any time by Venturers, whether they are working on an award or not.
